It was an early morning for me, getting up two hours before sunrise so that I could drive 40 miles and then hike to the top of Oberg Mountain with time to spare. I started setting up my camera on the cliff edge while it was still pitch dark. For some reason, I'm much less afraid of heights when I can't see how far down it is!
About ten minutes before official sunrise the light was still drab, but shortly after the sun began rising above Lake Superior some color started to show. Then as the sun lifted above the horizon it suddenly cast an incredible glow on the trees below and lit up the sky, leaving me with one of the best sunrise experiences of my life.
Most images have been captured using the most modern medium format digital cameras and lenses (Pentax 645D/645Z), providing exceptional image sharpness and color rendition. Very few photographers use this high-end and expensive equipment, which requires masterful technique and patience. All images are printed and framed at our downtown Duluth gallery using museum grade materials and archival, pigment-based inks.
